Warm water with lemon, coconut oil, and cayenne pepper. By Jennie Epland.
Welcome to the first entry of the BFC’s new nutrition and wellness feature. As members of the BFC, we come to shop for many different reasons but the one overall umbrella idea is HEALTH. We know that eating local and organic is the best thing for ourselves and our families, and the co-op makes it easy for us. Twice a month, this blog will go down a different avenue of holistic wellness and nutrition.
I’m really excited about it. I’ve been learning and researching the best way to take of myself for years and now I get to share it with you, so, thanks!
Since the weather is starting to turn, I thought I’d talk about “spring cleaning”. Not so much for your apartment , but for your body. Our bodies feel the change of seasons in the air and it can effect many of our physiological systems. Sometimes we need to open the windows and clean out the attic, so to speak. I am not talking about doing a cleanse, but we can touch on that subject another time in the future perhaps. Really I want to discuss gentle ways to detoxify the body, an out with the old in with the new approach. Here are some simple recipes to help.
1.Lemon. One of the best foods for, well, everything. Starting your
day off (first thing) with warm lemon water is so beneficial to your body by aiding digestion, flushing the system, vitamin C boost, among other things. This has been a ritual of mine for almost 5 years now and sometimes I add a little drama depending on how I feel. Right now I am adding turmeric and coconut oil to my lemon water.
Sometimes I add cinnamon and/or cayenne. Sometimes I do all of the above to pack a real punch, whether I feel bloated, inflamed, lethargic, or achy.
2. Parsley. Boil parsley, root and leaves for about 10 minutes. Let cool, then strain the leaves out and drink the parsley infused water. Huge benefits for clearing bacteria by flushing the liver, digestive tract and kidneys. I would suggest doing this twice a month.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar. Most people are familiar with this amazing product. ACV alkalizes the body and promotes digestive balance. Shooting a capful in the morning is a good way to start or midday for a boost. Some people make drinks with honey and ACV for a more palatable form of the benefits.
4. Sea Salt Baths. Take a big scoop of sea salt, ground fresh ginger, baking soda and throw it in the tub. All of these items remove toxins and, along with the soak and perspiration of a hot bath, will help gently cleanse the system through our largest organ…our skin!
5. Juicing! A simple yet effective juice recipe is a great way to flush our bodies. Beet, apple, cucumber. Easy as that. Betaine, pectin and lignans are the technical names that help the body detox. But there are so many juice recipes, especially those with dark leafy greens, that are highly beneficial.
Happy spring cleaning folks!
