Salmon have been a fundamental part of human life in Southeastern Alaska for thousands of years. Native to tributaries of the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, salmon are anadromous: born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean, then return to freshwater to reproduce.
The Sitka brand offers high quality, sustainable seafood that is always traceable to the source. The main harvest times for salmon are from mid-May to mid-September. Sitka immediately freezes their salmon upon catching them, to maintain freshness. Salmon that were caught during this past harvest season are now being distributed.
We personally enjoy wild Alaskan salmon in a variety of preparations, but food writer Mark Bittman’s simple roasted salmon recipe has received a lot of positive feedback. Bittman says, “Wild Alaskan salmon is the best choice for the environment and is leaner, darker, and better tasting than farm-raised salmon.”
We’re excited to offer wild Alaskan salmon from Sitka Salmon. Find them in our Freezer, or ask a coop member for help.
