If you’ve ever put nutritional yeast on your popcorn, you’ve had something quite similar to Bjorn Qorn (although, if you’re not a popcorn expert, probably not nearly as tasty). Hippies have been putting Vitamin B-rich nutritional yeast on popcorn for as long as co-ops have existed (and probably longer), and with good reason: not only is this combination nutrient rich and vegan, it’s also delicious. Bjorn Qorn upgrades this time-honored healthy snack essentially as much as it could possibly be upgraded: the homegrown, gmo free popcorn base is delicious, with a chewy-in-a-good-way texture, and much more flavor than your average microwave or movie theatre popcorn, the nutritional yeast is cheesy-tasting and tangy, and it’s all produced in a solar-powered facility. Bjorn Qorn was conceived of and created by two former Bard College roommates, one of whom is the son of a corn farmer, which might explain the deliciousness of the popped corn. They make sure that their product is all natural and gluten-free, and seem to have fun in the process – their website is bright, colorful, and full of easy-to-read, feel good information. Those of you with an interest in supporting small, local businesses will feel good about supporting Bjorn Qorn as a business–their instagram is full of DIY, tech-y photos of their custom made popcorn poppers, and they’re clearly having fun while trying to make a living and do good. They also recently partnered with Ohio’s Jeni’s Ice Cream, a foodie staple, on a Sun Popped Popcorn Ice Cream. The most exciting news of all might be about the nutritional content of Bjorn corn: not only is it gluten-free and vegan, it is also sugar-free, contains 4 grams of protein, 111% of your daily Vitamin B6 needs, and 30% of your daily Vitamin B12 requirement. For a simple crunchy snack, Bjorn Qorn packs a punch.
