Roots Hummus’ founder likes to call his products “the microbrew of hummus.” Why’s that? Maybe it’s because Roots makes fancy artisan hummuses in unique flavors. But it could also be because of the brand’s commitment to feeding and supporting the community from which it came.
The brand started from humble Asheville, NC origins, but now can be found in huge supermarkets and small shops like the co-op all across the US from Traverse City, MI to Lahaina, HI. It all began in a food processor in a storage room at the co-op on Haywood Road. It was in this food processor that Parris tested hummus recipes for his original vision: Roots Cafe. Parris wanted to provide the community with a space that not only served delicious, locally-sourced food, but also fostered community connection. As Roots Cafe’s popularity grew, more and more people raved about the hummus. Some cafe patrons asked Parris to sell his hummus by the pound! Soon, it became clear that Parris’ original dream of building a connection between food and community had outgrown his 200 square foot kitchen, and so the Roots Hummus brand was born.
Roots Hummus is still produced, packaged, and shipped out of their headquarters, located in Asheville’s River Arts District. No matter how big Roots Hummus gets, they will never forget the importance of their hard-working employees, and the communities that support them. Roots supports Certified Living Wages for their staff, and started The Roots Foundation, which ‘Creat[es] outdoor learning spaces and transform[s] schoolyards into abundant, edible ecosystems.’
Roots is the closest to homemade, all-natural hummus you can buy. Their ingredients are simple and pronounceable. For example, in the original hummus blend, you will find only: garbanzo beans, safflower oil, tahini, lemon juice, wheat-free tamari, distilled white vinegar, cumin, garlic, black pepper, acacia, and celtic sea salt. Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, or the occasional meat eater, hummus adds a nutritional powerhouse to virtually every meal. We’ve compiled a few of our favorite recipes below:
