The Mediterranean diet—that is, fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, moderate amounts of fish and generous amounts of olive oil — has garnered much attention from health-conscious foodies worldwide. The diet’s upsurge in popularity is due first and foremost to the mounting evidence that (paradoxically, in the view of mainstream nutrition) although the diet consists of high amounts of fat, people in Mediterranean countries are slimmer and have far lower rates of cardiovascular disease than people in countries like the United States, where obesity prevails, and where the “low-fat” diet has long been promoted as the panacea for reducing cardiovascular risks and maintaining a health weight. This myth, that fat is bad for us, continues to fall apart as a steady stream of research shows that our bodies in fact need healthy fats, such as olive oil, and not simply an overall reduction in fats.
Case in point: The typical Mediterranean consumes some twenty liters of extra virgin olive oil each year, and still the region boasts some of the lowest cholesterol levels, slimmest waistlines, and greatest numbers of centenarians (people who are at least 100 years old).
Of course, not only fantastically healthy, Mediterranean foods happen to also be delicious. Tomatoes, spinach and basil, with olive oil, anyone?
As not all olive oils are created equally — some are highly processed, of substandard quality, and as a result impart fewer health benefits — we’re proud to source what we believe to be the best quality oil olive from ILIADA, an award-winning Greek foods company sourcing olives from the Kalamata region of southern Greece. “Distinctly grassy-green in color, with a robust herbaceous flavor which builds in the mouth to leave a pleasant peppery aftertaste,” ILIADA offers a completely different, more decadent experience than conventional olive oil brands (and a healthier one, too!). We hope to see you soon!
