What is the Bushwick Food Coop?
The Bushwick Food Coop is a cooperatively owned and run grocery store. We transitioned from a buying club to a grocery store in August 2012 with the the store-front space at the Loom.
Our goal is to provide low-cost, organic, sustainably produced, local, fair-trade food to our community. All coop members put in 4 hours of work every month to keep costs low.
When is the Bushwick Food Coop open?
We are open Monday through Sunday, 10am-8pm.
Do I need to be a member to shop?
No, anyone can shop at Bushwick Food Coop. However, to shop at member prices and take part in the community, you need to be an active member.
Why should I become a member?
Members pay a low 24% markup for carefully sourced organic, local foods. This is compared to 75% markup for non-members or a 60-200% markup at other grocery stores.
Members are part-owners and workers in our community grocery store. They come to meetings, get involved and collaborate to help our small business run. In exchange for their efforts, they shop at our low prices, vote on important issues, and place special orders for items not in the store.
What is the work requirement?
Members work 4 hours every month at meetings, through committees, and in-store.
Is there a fee to join?
Yes, the fee is $50, paid at your Member Orientation. It can be paid in full, or in $10 installments over 4 weeks. There is also a $25 annual fee for an additional 4 years. Qualifying members may receive a discounted $15 membership, which can be paid in $5 installments.
Can I shop with EBT?
Yes! We now accept SNAP and EBT.
Can I request an item I don’t see in the store?
Yes, members can place personal orders for a 24% markup. Bulk orders and pre-paid Frontier orders receive a special 12% markup. If you’d like to see an item permanently added to the store, just let us know.
