The Doe Fund Baked Goods
Our mission at the Bushwick Food Cooperative—to promote healthy living for our members, while shaping a positive footprint within our community—is our raison d’etre, our reason for existence. We’ve never been about profits, or any other usual business metrics. Our purpose has always been one higher than our selves. And we come to work, we do our shifts, we create a community of like-minded members, to connect with this greater purpose. And our members, our local community, and—in a small but not insignificant way—our global community, all benefit from our socially- and environmentally-responsible practices. That we can together create a better, healthier, more sustainable and more prosperous world is what keeps us going.
Sure, the organic quinoa is cheap. And the kombucha on-tap is pretty nifty, too… But providing affordable, healthy foods to our members is just one of many goals. The all-encompassing goal, in essence, is to make the world a better place for as many people as we can.
That’s why we’ve chosen to support The Doe Fund—a New York City-based nonprofit working to “develop and implement cost-effective, holistic programs that meet the needs of a diverse population working to break the cycles of homelessness, addiction, and criminal recidivism.” The organization, in its efforts to help disadvantaged individuals and families “achieve permanent self-sufficiency,” provides transitional work and housing, life skills, educational assistance, occupational training, job readiness, and graduate services.
We’re proud to offer a variety of tasty baked goods, baked by participants in The Doe Fund’s Culinary Arts Program: scones, cookies and brownies. Needless to say, these desserts are sweeter than most—with each sale helping to support the organization towards its mission.
We hope you enjoy these delectable treats, and take pride in knowing that each dollar spent (or each bite taken) helps to create a better world for a group of people eager to change their lives.
